Help My Mother, Jorna Rani Das, Fight Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer

My mother, Jorna Rani Das, is a 56-year-old homemaker from Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, Sylhet, Bangladesh. She is a loving wife and mother of two sons who has always devoted her life to taking care of her family and living a simple, happy life.

Today, she is fighting for her life against Stage IV metastatic breast cancer.

I am her son, and I am writing this because my family can no longer face the enormous cost of her treatment alone.

Her battle began in 2021

On June 20, 2021, my mother was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma (NOS, Grade II) of the right breast.

She received treatment at Square Hospital, Dhaka, including six cycles of chemotherapy with Docetaxel, Carboplatin, and Herceptin (trastuzumab).

Her treatment continued from November 8, 2021, to June 8, 2022, costing our family approximately BDT 40 lakh (৳4,000,000).

After completing treatment, her follow-up tests showed an excellent response, and we were grateful to see her recover and return to her normal life.

We thought the worst was behind us.

We were wrong.

The cancer returned

On December 12, 2025, a serious lesion was discovered in her brain.

Imaging showed a 2.9 × 3.6 × 3.7 cm lobulated, heterogeneously enhancing lesion in the left frontal lobe, with significant surrounding edema, intralesional bleeding, and approximately 7 mm rightward midline shift.

She was treated first at Square Hospital in Dhaka and subsequently at Apollo Specialized Hospital in Chennai, India.

From March 9 to March 20, 2026, she underwent external beam radiotherapy using a Linear Accelerator. She received 33 Gy in 10 fractions to the gross tumor volume and 30 Gy in 10 fractions to the whole-brain clinical target volume.

The treatment cost was approximately BDT 16 lakh (৳1,600,000).

Once again, she responded well, and we were hopeful.

Now she is facing Stage IV cancer

On August 8, 2026, our family received devastating news.

My mother's current diagnosis is:

Stage IV metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer (ER+, PR+, HER2+) with metastases to the liver, bones, and left adrenal gland.

She is now experiencing poor appetite, significant bone pain, abnormal movements, and difficulty with memory and everyday activities.

Her doctors have recommended systemic treatment with:

- Enhertu (trastuzumab deruxtecan)

- Zoledronic Acid 4 mg

- Fulvestrant 500 mg IM

Her treatment is expected to cost approximately BDT 3.92 lakh (৳392,000) every month, based on her current treatment plan.

This includes approximately:

- Enhertu: ৳3,00,000/month

- Zoledronic acid: ৳65,000/month

- Fulvestrant: ৳9,000/month

- Hospital/day-care charges: ৳5,000/month

- Doctor consultation: ৳2,000/month

- Blood tests: ৳5,000/month

- Other medicines: ৳6,000/month

Her doctors have initially planned six cycles, followed by reassessment. Depending on her response, they believe she may need treatment for up to twelve cycles.

That means the treatment itself could cost approximately ৳23.52 lakh for the initial six months, or approximately ৳47.04 lakh if twelve monthly cycles are ultimately required, before additional major scans, travel, accommodation, or unexpected medical expenses.

Our family has already spent more than ৳65 lakh

Over the course of her illness, our family has already spent more than BDT 65 lakh (৳6,500,000) on her cancer treatment, investigations, medicines, hospital care, and related expenses.

Our family's income comes mainly from a small village pharmacy, and we have very limited financial resources.

We currently have approximately ৳5 lakh in savings.

After years of treatment, we simply do not have enough money left to continue paying for the treatment she urgently needs.

My mother has fought through breast cancer, brain metastasis, radiation treatment, and now widespread metastatic disease. Every new diagnosis has taken a financial and emotional toll on our family, but we are not ready to give up on her.
